Commercial Diets
There are many different kibble and canned pet food choices lining the shelves of supermarkets and pet stores. Unfortunately, the quality of these foods varies greatly and the advertising and marketing of these foods is often misleading. They are all highly-processed and most of the nutrients are “cooked” out of the food, necessitating the addition of synthetic vitamins and minerals. Many commercial dry and canned foods also contain preservatives, artificial colors, artificial flavors and other unhealthy additives. The ingredients may appear nutritious on the label,
but are, in reality, not fresh and not natural; the words “natural” and “holistic” on the labels of commercial diets mean very little regarding the quality of the food inside.

There are other factors, as well, that determine the quality of a commercial pet food including manufacturing process, food ingredient quality (human grade versus feed grade), country of ingredient origin, packaging and testing.
The rise in popularity of commercial dry and canned pet foods since the mid- 1950’s has been accompanied by an increase in the number of chronic diseases and conditions diagnosed in dogs and cats, many of which can be directly linked to diet. Whole Food Diets
We have been told for many years to never feed our pets “people food,” assured by the experts processed, commercial foods are “complete” and contain the balance of nutrients needed by our pets to live healthy lives. In reality, our pets need fresh, living foods, just as we do. For thousands of years, dogs and cats have been eating the whole, living foods found in their natural habitats. Their bodies have not evolved to eat the excessive amounts of starch and sugar found (and hidden) in many of today’s commercial pet diets. In addition, whole, living foods contain thousands of enzymes,
antioxidants and phytochemicals not present in the heat-processed foods we are encouraged to purchase and feed our pets.
Many well-known and well-respected veterinarians, trainers and breeders are advocating for a return to “real” food. Even those families living busy lives can easily add whole food nutrition to their pets’ diets.
